About Kashinoki Language School

Kashinoki Language Japanese School is an after school “play and learn” Japanese language learning program for children with some previous Japanese knowledge and understanding. It currently offers a combined Kindergarten/Grade 1 class for its first year in operation. However, we plan to add grade levels every year for the next four years until the school can offer K-Grade 4 levels. 

Kashinoki’s Goals are:

1. To help children who come from Japanese-speaking homes or who have graduated from Donguri Preschool or other Japanese preschools in Vancouver continue to grow in their Japanese language abilities, building confidence in speaking, reading, and writing
   
2. To create a fun and engaging program so students enjoy learning their heritage language, and can continue to communicate with their family and community in Japanese as they grow.
   
3. To create a space where the Japanese community in Vancouver’s westside can come together through school events, cultural celebrations, and community collaboration.

Curriculum

In the first year of operation, the curriculum will include second language learning, cultural learning, singing, and crafts. Over subsequent years, we also plan to incorporate cultural and/or intergenerational events (e.g. undōkai, motchitzuki, etc…with members of the community and families enrolled in Donguri Preschool). 

Kindergarten/Grade 1 (ages 4-7):
-Hiragana reading and writing learning
-Vocabulary development
-Games, songs, cultural activities by season

Registration

• Class: Wednesdays 3:30-5:15pm
• Fall term dates: Jan 7th, 2025 – Mar 11th, 2025
• Location: 3214 W 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC
• Fee: $250 for 10 classes

かしのき日本語学校について

かしのき日本語学校は、すでに日本語の知識や理解がある子どもたちを対象とした、放課後の「遊んで学ぶ」日本語学習プログラムです。現在は開校初年度として、幼稚園／小学1年生の合同クラスを開講しています。今後4年間、毎年学年を増設し、最終的にはキンダーガーデンからグレード4までのクラスを提供する予定です。

かしのきの目標

• どんぐり幼稚園やバンクーバー内の他の日本幼稚園を卒園した子どもたち,もしくは、家庭で日本語を話す子供たちが、第二言語としての日本語を維持・向上できるよう、会話・読解・書字能力の定着を図ること。
• 楽しく魅力的なプログラムを通じて、子どもたちが自分のヘリテージ言語としての日本語を学ぶことを楽しみ、成長しても家族やコミュニティと日本語でコミュニケーションを続けられるようにすること。
• バンクーバー西側に住む日本人コミュニティが、学校行事、文化的なお祝い、地域との協働を通じて交流できる場をつくること。

カリキュラム

開校初年度のカリキュラムには、日本語の第二言語学習、文化学習、歌、工作が含まれます。今後の年度には、地域の方々やどんぐり幼稚園に通うご家族と一緒に参加できる、文化的または世代間交流のイベント（例：運動会、もちつき など）も取り入れていく予定です。

幼稚園／小学1年生（4〜7歳）

• ひらがなの読み書き学習
• 語彙の習得
• ゲーム、歌、季節に合わせた文化活動
