About Kashinoki Language School

Kashinoki Language Japanese School is an after school “play and learn” Japanese language learning program for children with some previous Japanese knowledge and understanding. In September 2026 it will offer two classes: A Kindergarten class on Thursdays, and a Grade 1 class on Tuesdays. We plan to add grade levels every year for the next three years until the school can offer K-Grade 4 levels.

Kashinoki’s Goals are:

1. To help children who come from Japanese-speaking homes or who have graduated from Donguri Preschool or other Japanese preschools in Vancouver continue to grow in their Japanese language abilities, building confidence in speaking, reading, and writing
2. To create a fun and engaging program so students enjoy learning their heritage language, and can continue to communicate with their family and community in Japanese as they grow.
3. To create a space where the Japanese community in Vancouver’s westside can come together through school events, cultural celebrations, and community collaboration.

Curriculum

Kashinoki currently offers a Kindergarten class. In September 2026, we will additionally be offering a Grade 1 class. The curriculum will include second language learning, hiragana writing, cultural learning, singing, and crafts.

Kashinoki has one head teacher: Hitomi Imamura, and Yuki Bekku is the assistant teacher. We also typically have one volunteer in the class.

A Typical Kashinoki Kindergarten Class

• Opening Circle Time
  • We begin with attendance, greetings, and singing. These activities help children develop confidence and build routines for using Japanese naturally.
• Learning Time
  • Students learn hiragana, how to read calendars and dates, and various ways of counting in Japanese. They also practice writing and reading hiragana through age-appropriate worksheets.
• Fun Activity Time
  • Through a variety of games, children expand their Japanese vocabulary and communication skills. We also incorporate crafts and seasonal activities that introduce Japanese culture and traditions.
• Story Time
  • We carefully select high-quality Japanese picture books that match the children’s age and language level. Through stories, children are exposed to new vocabulary, expressions, and the joy of reading in Japanese.

Grade 1 Class

In Grade 1, students continue to review and strengthen their hiragana skills while also learning katakana and kanji. Throughout the school year, we use the same Japanese language textbook used by first-grade students in Japan, Kokugo 1 (Part 1), and work through it at a pace appropriate for our learners. かしのき日本語学校について

かしのき日本語学校は、ある程度の日本語の知識や理解を持つ子どもたちを対象とした、放課後の「遊びながら学ぶ」日本語学習プログラムです。

2026年9月からは、木曜日のキンダークラスと火曜日のグレード1クラスの2クラスを開講します。また、今後3年間は毎年学年を一つずつ追加し、最終的にはキンダーからグレード4までのクラスを提供する予定です。

かしのきの目標

1. 日本語を話す家庭で育つ子どもたちや、どんぐりえん、およびバンクーバー市内のその他の日本語プリスクールを卒園した子どもたちが、日本語能力をさらに伸ばし、話す・読む・書く力に自信を持てるよう支援すること。
2. 子どもたちが継承語としての日本語を楽しく学び続けられるよう、魅力的で参加しやすいプログラムを提供し、成長しても家族や地域社会とのつながりを日本語で保てるよう支援すること。
3. 学校行事やお祭り、地域との協力活動を通じて、バンクーバーウェストサイド地域の日本人コミュニティが集い、つながることのできる場をつくること。

かしのきのクラスの流れ（キンダークラスの場合）

• はじめのかい
  • 出席確認、あいさつ、歌の時間を通して、自然に日本語を使う習慣を身につけます。
• お勉強の時間
  • ひらがな、カレンダーの読み方、さまざまな数の数え方などを学びます。
  • また、ワークシートでひらがなの練習を行います。
• おたのしみ時間
  • さまざまなゲームを通して語彙力を高めます。また、クラフト活動を通して日本の文化や季節の行事に触れる機会を設けています。
• 絵本の読み聞かせ
  • 子どもたちの年齢や日本語レベルに合わせて、厳選した絵本を紹介しています。物語を楽しみながら、自然に日本語の表現や語彙に親しみます。

Grade 1 Class

Grade1では、ひらがなの復習に加えカタカナ、漢字を学びます。日本の小学校一年生で用いる国語の教科書「こくご一（上）」を一年かけて学ぶ予定です。クラスの見学を希望される方は、お気軽にお問い合わせください。
