What We Do

Childcare and Language Learning 保育・日本語教育プログラム

WJLS runs a Japanese Preschool, named “Donguri” in Kitsilano, Vancouver. We consider every little donguri (“acorn”) to be a meaningful part of a large oak tree (kashinoki). Our ECE-qualified educators with many years of work experience in Japan and Canada provide heartfelt care that suits each child’s needs and growth. Children at Donguri Preschool embrace Japanese culture in the Canadian environment: they will eat mochi they have prepared by themselves during our New Year celebration, wear costumes and prepare crafts of holidays like Hinamatsuri and Setsubun, Trick or Treat at Hallowe’en, all while enjoying daily outdoor play and neighbourhood nature walks, rain or shine. In September 2025, we opened an after school Japanese language program called “Kashinoki” (meaning oak tree) for school aged kids. This fun and engaging program meets once a week for an hour and forty-five minutes after school. Children learn to write hiragana, further their Japanese speaking skills, make crafts, and sing songs: all in a play-based environment. It’s our goal for our kids to have a great experience at language school so that they continue on in their Japanese language journey for years to come. WJLSは、バンクーバー、キツラノエリアにある日本語幼稚園「どんぐりえん」を運営しています。私たちは、一粒ひとつぶの小さなどんぐり（子どもたち）が、やがて大きなかしの木を形づくる大切な存在に成長すると考えています。

どんぐり園では、日本とカナダの両国で豊富な経験を積んだ有資格の幼児教育者（ECE）が、それぞれの子どもの個性や成長に寄り添いながら、心を込めて保育を行っています。

子どもたちは、カナダでの生活環境において日本文化に親しみながら成長します。お正月には自分たちでついたお餅を食べたり、ひな祭りや節分では工作や衣装を楽しんだり、ハロウィーンにはTrik or Treatに出かけたりします。また、天候に関わらず毎日の外遊びや近隣での自然散策を通して、心身ともに健やかに育っています。

2025年9月には、学齢期の子どもたちを対象とした放課後日本語プログラム「かしのき日本語学校」を開校しました。「かしのき」は、どんぐりが成長した大きな木を意味します。

このプログラムは週に1回、放課後に1時間45分間のクラスで、子どもたちは楽しみながら、ひらがなの読み書き、日本語でのコミュニケーション能力、工作や日本の歌などを学びます。遊びを取り入れた学習環境の中で、日本語を学ぶ楽しさを感じてもらうことを大切にしています。

私たちは、子どもたちが日本語学校での学びを前向きな経験として受け止め、長く日本語学習を続けていけるよう支援することを目指しています。

Cultural Programs 文化プログラム

We aim to provide children with spaces and opportunities that facilitate their understanding of Japanese art, culture and language. We host an annual traditional Japanese-style summer festival in July for Donguri and Kashinoki families. Children engage in traditional Japanese festival games, many of which have been handmade by parents. They also do crafts, enjoy Japanese foods, and dance the “Anpanman Ondo” choreographed by the preschool teachers.

We also host an annual new year community event in January, which is open to the public, welcoming around 200 people. This event includes traditional games, traditional mochi making, Japanese food, crafts, prizes, and a book sale.

私たちは、子どもたちが日本の文化・芸術・言語に親しみ、理解を深めることができる場と機会を提供することを目指しています。

毎年8月には、どんぐりえんとかしのき日本語学校のご家族を対象に、日本の伝統的な夏祭りを開催しています。子どもたちは、保護者の皆さんが手作りしたさまざまな縁日ゲームを楽しんだり、クラフトに参加したり、日本のお祭りならではの食べ物を味わったりします。また、幼稚園の先生たちが振り付けをした「アンパンマン音頭」をみんなで踊り、日本の夏の文化を楽しみます。

さらに、毎年1月には地域コミュニティ向けの新年会イベントを開催しています。このイベントは一般の方にも開放されており、毎年約200名の方々にご参加いただいています。新年会では、伝統的な日本の遊びや餅つき体験、日本食の販売、クラフトコーナー、抽選会、古本市など、さまざまな催しを通して日本文化を体験していただけます。

これらの文化プログラムを通じて、子どもたちとその家族、そして地域の皆さまが日本文化に親しみ、交流を深める機会を提供しています。

Support for Parents 子育てサポート

We are currently in the planning phases of developing a weekly Parent and Tot program. We know being a new parent can be very isolating, particularly as newcomers to Canada. We are hoping to help new parents in the area connect with one another through Japanese songs, play time, and conversation. As this program is still in development, we will gladly welcome your suggestions. Please feel free to contact us if you have any ideas.

現在、私たちは週1回の幼児を対象とした親子プログラム（Parent and Tot Program）の開設に向けて準備を進めています。
最近、親になったばかりの方々や、特にカナダへ移住して間もないご家庭の方々は、孤立感を抱くことも少なくありません。私たちは、日本語の歌や親子遊び、保護者同士の交流を通して、地域の子育て世代がつながり、支え合えるコミュニティづくりを目指しています。
このプログラムは現在企画・準備段階にあるため、皆さまからのご意見やアイデアを歓迎しています。
